For the exhibition at the Foundation the artist presents a new series of large-format paintings, works that incorporate sculptural objects derived from previous performances placed in dialogue with iconographic backgrounds from different origins, ancient painting, cinema, literary illustrations. Each work reconfigures fragments of images that belong to other works, stories, places and times, in a logic that recalls that of bricolage, in the anthropological meaning of the term. One of the works features the artist's fetish animal, the bat, former hero of the Bat Opera pictorial series.
Monster Chetwynd's work incorporates elements of folklore, ancient and contemporary pop culture, art history, cinema and literature, to create works that mock hierarchies, subvert rules and invent new rituals. Whether they are paintings, sculptures, videos, installations or performative events, his works are imbued with that carnival character that Michail Bachtin defined as "a form of syncretistic show of a ritual nature", capable of abolishing distinctions and limits between categories of objects, of places and people. In this sense the performative element is central to the artist's practice, the conceptual and emotional engine from which the other expressive dimensions derive, supports, tools, fetishes or residues of a living and participatory action, which puts the body at the center, interaction, group dynamics.
The objects that populate Chetwynd's works are farcical characters, puppets, props and props, disguises, backdrops and storyboards: in tune with this explosion of energy that transforms the world into a living theater, the artist's visual universe is exuberant, picturesque, overwhelming.
