On the 30th of October 2024, OGR Torino inaugurates Retinal Rivalry, a solo exhibition by Cyprien Gaillard (Paris, 1980) curated by Samuele Piazza, in Track 1 of the former Officine Grandi Riparazioni. During the Torino Art Week 2024, in the former industrial spaces, until the 2nd of February 2025, the cinematic medium becomes sculpture through the new video work of the Parisian artist, visible for the first time in Italy after its debut at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, Switzerland, as part of the collective "Summer Exhibition." The work is commissioned by OGR Torino and co-produced by OGR Torino, Fondation Beyeler, Haus der Kunst München, the French Ministry of Culture, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Sprüth Magers, and Gladstone Gallery. "Retinal Rivalry" reaffirms Cyprien Gaillard's interest, which began with "Nightlife" in 2015, in moving stereoscopic images and their sculptural, spectral, and psychedelic potential. Expanding the pictorial space and embracing the spatiality of the medium as the organizing principle of the various subjects involved, the film abandons narration to focus on pure vision. The work focuses on the architectural environment of Germany, from Oktoberfest to Roman ruins found in a 1970s parking lot under the Cologne Cathedral, from a Burger King located inside a Nuremberg Nazi meeting substation to the tourist infrastructure crossing the romantic landscape of Bastei. Oscillating between a deep, void-like vision and a sculptural re-creation, the images of "Retinal Rivalry" extend beyond the screen into the exhibition space, altering our perception of the visible world.
