ongoing Jean Cocteau

Curated by: Kenneth E. Silver

The show

From April 13, 2024 the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents Jean Cocteau. The Juggler's Revenge, the first major retrospective held in Italy dedicated to Jean Cocteau (1889–1963). Curated by Kenneth E. Silver, an authoritative expert on the French artist and art historian at New York University, the exhibition sheds light on the versatility – or juggling dexterity – that characterizes Cocteau's artistic language and for which the artist he is often criticized by his contemporaries.

Through a surprising variety of works, ranging from drawings to graphic works, from jewels to tapestries, from historical documents, to books, magazines, photographs, documentaries and films directed by the enfant terrible of the French art scene, Jean Cocteau. The Juggler's Revenge traces the development of Cocteau's unique and very personal aesthetic and retraces the salient moments of his tumultuous artistic career.
