The MAK Museum Wien hosts the oldest and largest museum library in Europe, as well as a unique collection of artistic craftsmanship from the Middle Ages to the present day in the fields of furniture, glass, porcelain, silver, and textiles.
The building was erected in 1871. Since 2004, the museum has been illuminated in the evening by the permanent outdoor installation MAKlite, a work by the international land art artist James Turrell. In 2015, MAK was the first museum to purchase a work of art (the screensaver by van den Dorpel "Event listeners") with Bitcoins. With over 300,000 pieces accessible online, MAK has the largest online collection of all Austrian federal museums.
