Marinella Senatore (1977), trained in music, fine arts and cinema, is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is characterized by public participation that activates a dialogue between history, culture and social structures. Rethinking the role of the artist as author and that of the public as user, his work merges forms of resistance, theater of learning, vernacular and popular culture, protest dance and music, public ceremonies, civil rites and mass events, reflecting on the political nature of collective formations and their impact on the social history of places and communities.
In 2013 he founded The School of Narrative Dance, a multidisciplinary, nomadic and free school, based on an idea of participatory and anti-hierarchical education. With his School, the artist creates platforms that invite community members to carry out storytelling activities and collective actions in reference to community rituals, from public celebrations to protests. The School takes different forms, adapting to the space that hosts it from time to time: it has been activated in Italy and abroad in over 23 countries, involving around 8 million people.
The artist has participated in the following contemporary art biennials: Sao Paulo Biennial, Venice Biennial, Lyon Biennial, Thessaloniki Biennial, Liverpool Biennial, Athens Biennial, Havana Biennial, Gothenburg Biennial, Cuenca Biennial , Pune Biennial, South Tyrol Biennial, Bangkok Biennial and Manifesta 12 in Palermo.
Senatore has received numerous honors including: the ACACIA 2021 Award, the Cantica21 Italian Contemporary Art Everywhere Award, the Cinello Unlimited Award, the Italian Council Award (4th and 7th editions), MAXXI Award and AMACI (Association of Museums of 'Arte Contemporanea Italiani), American Academy in Rome Fellowship 2012, Castello di Rivoli Fellowship, 2013.
Since 2021 she is the only European artist teaching at The Alternative Art School (TAAS).
