The Galleria Estense

Opened in 1854 by Francesco V of Austria-Este and in its present location in the Palazzo dei Musei since 1894, the Galleria Estense is comprised of four halls and sixteen rooms dedicated to the rich collection of the Este family during the height of their power as rulers of the Duchy of Ferrara and Modena. The collection shows off the wide-ranging, aristocratic tastes of the family, comprising of an exquisite number of paintings from the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, among which there is a special focus on paintings from the Po Valley. There are also a range of marble and terracotta sculptures on display alongside a substantial collection of decorative arts including bronzes, maiolica, medals, ivories and musical instruments that were also part of the ducal collections. Among the most notable works in the gallery are the Pietà by Cima da Conegliano, Correggio’s Madonna and Child, the Portrait of Francesco I d’Este by Velasquez, a triptych by El Greco, Guido Reni’s Crucifixion, and a marble bust of Francesco I d’Este by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
