Appiani, Napoleon's premier peintre, portrays in this work a cast taken from the standing Discobolus of Naucides of Argos. The plaster copy was purchased in Rome for the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan where it arrived in 1806. The painting demonstrates the importance of the Ancient in the neoclassical era.
