The bronze sculptural group depicts Hercules capturing the Ceryneian Hind, the fourth of his twelve labors. The hind, with golden horns and hooves of silver and bronze, was sacred to Artemis. King Eurystheus ordered Hercules to capture it alive to offer it to the goddess. After a year-long chase, Hercules managed to wound it with an arrow and carried it on his shoulders to bring it back home. Along the way, he encountered Artemis who was enraged, but Hercules appeased her and obtained permission to bring the hind to Eurystheus, on the condition that he would later release it into the woods. The artwork was found in Pompeii and donated to the Museum by the King of the Two Sicilies, Ferdinand II of Bourbon. Originally, water spouted from the animal's mouth into a fountain that flowed into a marble basin, also preserved.
