Description

This relief represents the foundation of Aquileia in the presence of magistrates from Rome, which involved a ritual traditionally associated with Romulus. The furrow made by a plough pulled by a richly adorned bull and cow defined the pomerium, the sacred impassable perimeter of the city. This relief would have been on show in an important urban location, perhaps over one of the city gates.
