Description

This statue head represents in a very realistic way a mature man, with deep wrinkles on the forehead and on the sides of the mouth, thick eyebrows and a mouth tight-lipped that gives a severe look to the image. The way of outline the eyebrows and the wrinkles have similarities with Late Hellenistic sculptures. The eyes look up and express at the same time interior energy and an idealized sense of pathos(sadness). Same scholars identified parallels with the representations of the Roman general Sulla. More likely, it is a private portrait of a man from the local dominant class who appreciated the realism of the Roman sculpture, but also the pathos typical of the Late Hellenistic sculpture.
The severe look symbolizes the strong reliability and the morality of the man in his civic engagement.
Probably the statue was made in a local atelier located in the city of Alba Fucens.
