Augusto Murer , shy protagonist of twentieth-century Italian sculpture , is celebrated in an intense retrospective at the Civic Museum of Belluno, in the Palazzo Fulcis, from 30 June to 18 September . The exhibition is the highlight of the celebrations that the Veneto Region, the Province of Belluno and the Municipalities of Belluno and Falcade (where the Murer Museum is located and where the artist was born on 21 May 1922), with Longarone Fiere , they wanted to remember an artist who, as Elio Armano points out - who is the promoter of the centenary celebrations - was not "only" a great sculptor but also a man, and an intellectual, who immersed himself in the history of his time " .

Murer is known to most for the great expressionist bronzes. From the monument built in 1968 in Vittorio Veneto for the fiftieth anniversary of the First World War, to the large bronze figure of 1974 on the top of the Grappa, to the famous monument to the "Partisan", created in collaboration with Carlo Scarpa to be placed along the Riva that leads at the Giardini della Biennale. A pathos, which is also found in many religious works, such as the large portal of the church of Caxias do Sul, dedicated to the epic of the Venetian emigrants in Brazil.

But it is in the drawing and sculpting of wood, the raw material of his valleys, easily available and inexpensive, that Murer expresses the powerful immediacy of his art. The works of the second 40s are in wood. With wood sculptures he participates in the Suzzara Prize, one of the most prestigious in post-war Italy. The Milanese debut was in 1953, supported by Orio Vergani and Renato Birolli , showing that he imposed it on the national scene. From there a dense path of works, in wood and bronze, of drawings and acquaintances. With Mario Rigoni Stern, for whom he creates the series of etchings dedicated to “The Sergeant in the Snow”, with Rafael Alberti, who dedicates to him the poem “Augusto Murer sculptor 1977, with Andrea Zanzotto. He is called to work and exhibit in various countries between Europe and the Americas, his works enter the most important museums. But the epicenter will never move from the mountains of the house. And here he wanted to leave testimony of himself, arranging that his Studio, built in the middle of the woods of the Agorder mountains, became a Museum, a center of art and culture that preserves his bas-reliefs, his works carved in wood and those cast in bronze. .
