The Museum of Military History, known as the Hadtörténeti Intézet és Múzeum, is located in the Buda Castle complex, precisely at 2-4 Kapisztrán tér (the entrance is on Tóth Árpád sétány). Housed in the former Nándor Barracks, the building was transformed into a museum in the 1920s and is a must-visit for those exploring the symbolic district of the Hungarian capital.
The museum stands out for its rich collection of weapons, uniforms, flags, medals, maps, and coins (around 28,000 pieces), ranging from the Ottoman wars of the 16th century to the War of Independence of 1848-49, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the World Wars, and the communist period. The permanent collection includes the prestigious Armoury section, an educational display featuring military artifacts arranged chronologically and life-size figures illustrating key military epochs of Hungary.
The museum also commemorates the 1956 Revolution, with an exhibition dedicated to the "13 days" of resistance and repression. In the outdoor courtyard, there is a small memorial park with a cannon and statues, ideal for a stroll amidst history and views of the Danube.
