Goethe-Museum Düsseldorf

The Goethe-Museum Düsseldorf is a museum entirely dedicated to the German poet Goethe. Inaugurated in 1956, the museum's collection houses around 50,000 original pieces from Goethe's time, including autographed documents (letters, working manuscripts, archival entries, musical manuscripts), first editions and dedicatory copies, graphic works (portraits, views, illustrations), hand drawings (including about 50 by Goethe), oil paintings, silhouettes, busts, masks, coins, medals and plaques as well as a collection of porcelain and glass. The collection is complemented by a large collection of scores of works by Goethe and his contemporaries on music, text and song books, plays and concert and festival programs of the time. In addition to the museum, there is also the manuscript archive, the research library, the art collection and an events center.

The Goethe Museum is housed in the Rococo Jägerhof castle. It organizes numerous temporary exhibitions on the history of arts and literature. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran reform, in 2017 the museum organized an exhibition on Goethe and Luther entitled "Bible, language, truth". In 2018, in a highly acclaimed exhibition, "Deeds of Light", Goethe's theory of colors was juxtaposed with the work of artist Heinz Mack. In 2019 the photos of the photographer Helmut Schlaiß, who had taken in the footsteps of Goethe's passages in Italy, were exhibited.
