The exhibition Iron and Water. The Gerenzone Valley between memory and transformation - photographs by Alessio Volontè will be inaugurated on Friday, October 23 at 6:00 pm at the Viscontea Tower, promoted and curated by Officina Gerenzone APS in collaboration with the Municipality of Lecco and the Urban Museum System of Lecco, as part of the 2026 exhibition program of the Municipality of Lecco. The exhibition will be open for visits until November 15.The initiative stems from the desire of the Association to try to tell the story of the Gerenzone Valley and the centuries-old iron industry through a different perspective. The lens of Alessio Volontè, a member of Officina Gerenzone, who passionately and poetically documented and interpreted the themes of the iron history in Lecco and the transformation not only of the territory, but also of the industries themselves, born along the river between the 19th and 20th centuries and now operating elsewhere.The photographic journey follows the river from Laorca to the mouth, through abandoned and still active production structures, both along the Gerenzone and relocated to areas more suitable for current production needs. Ample space is given to the remains of dams, gates, wheels, and small rivers, inserted in a natural landscape, in some sections still intact, constituting a union between nature and industry that brings us back to the ancient bond between water and work, crucial for the birth and development of the centuries-old iron industry in Lecco.The exhibition does not aim to completely reconstruct all the activities that once developed along the river. Therefore, some companies have been selected, representative of the various sectors of the Lecco iron processing, to provide the broadest possible view of this productive heritage.In some cases, the shots have allowed documenting work environments, machinery, and equipment abandoned for decades and with an uncertain future. Alessio Volontè's photographs thus also take on an important documentary and testimonial value to narrate the last surviving shreds of a millenary history, destined to lose its memory.The exhibition aims to renew attention towards the protection and enhancement of industrial archaeology artifacts and landscapes. A heritage that, according to the 1994 Census carried out by the Civic Museums of Lecco, has decreased by almost 80%.The goal is to strengthen awareness of the value of a productive heritage that comes from afar and that still today characterizes the economic and social vitality of the territory.Officina Gerenzone wants to continue this path of research and knowledge, also through dialogue with companies that have their roots along the Gerenzone.
