The Civic Photographic Archive of Milan, founded in 1933 at the Castello Sforzesco, is today one of the most important Italian institutes dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of the photographic heritage .

The photographic heritage, consisting of 850,000 original photographs, dating from 1840 to the present day, is representative of all the photographic techniques experimented between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the activity of important photographers including Nadar, Adolphe Braun, Franz Hanfstaengl, the Brogi and the Alinari of Florence; the photographers who worked in Europe and in the various territories of the Ottoman Empire up to China and Japan; twentieth century photographers such as Emilio Sommariva, Antonio Paoletti, Mario Perotti.

The different photographic collections range from the history of the Milanese and Lombard historical-artistic heritage, to the urban and social history of Milan, to portraiture, to reportage on various historical events, including the Roman Republic of 1849, the Risorgimento uprisings and of 1898, the Italian landscape, views of European and extra-European cities, from the Ottoman Empire, to India, China and Japan.
