The show

FMAV Fondazione Modena Arti Visive announces for autumn 2023 a great season of exhibitions and events dedicated to experimentation, creativity, international music and young art. It starts on 15 September 2023 in the spaces of FMAV Palazzina dei Giardini, with Strahlen/Raggi, an important solo exhibition by the German artist and composer Carsten Nicolai , known internationally under the pseudonym of Alva Noto , which brings together for the first time in Italy a significant nucleus of recently created works and an unprecedented project born during the lockdown caused by the Covid 19 pandemic.

The title Strahlen/Raggi alludes not only to the physical laws of propagation of light particles and sound waves, but in poetic terms also to the energy emanating from the object-work of art conceived by human creative genius. By exploring the areas of transition between music, art and science , Carsten Nicolai intends to overcome man's perceptive and sensorial barriers by trying to synthesize physical phenomena, such as sound and light, into a single immersive and multi-sensory experience. These Strahlen propagate following calculable and predictable mathematical-geometric patterns, which however can suddenly distort, giving rise to errors or self-organizing counter phenomena. The aesthetic result of the artist's intervention on these physical events takes shape through site-specific installations and paintings in which a complex code of acoustic and visual signs brings the human body and surrounding space into close relationship, trying to cancel the physical distance through sensory interaction.

The exhibition is curated by Lorenzo Respi and created in collaboration with the independent record label Noton of Berlin and with the Smart Life Festival 2023 of Modena. For the Smart Life Festival Alva Noto will also be the protagonist of a live performance at the Storchi Theater on Thursday 28 September 2023.

Carsten Nicolai , Berlin-based artist and composer, is known under the pseudonym Alva Noto for his musical productions. His work focuses on exploring the intersections of music, art and science. Among others, he has performed at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Center Pompidou in Paris and the Tate Modern in London. Among the music he composed, the soundtrack of the film The Revenant and the sound design of the virtual reality installation Carne y Arena by Alejandro González Iñárritu.
