The Years proposes a dialogue between the Madre collection and important public and private collections, mainly from the city of Naples. Through emblematic works, the exhibition evokes significant moments and artistic productions that have taken place in this territory, telling a collective story and celebrating shared memory. For this first chapter, for example, Carlo Alfano's work Delle distanze dalla rappresentazione (1968-1969) is exhibited in the museum's rooms, originally shown in 1969 at the Modern Art Agency gallery of Lucio Amelio and acquired in the Madre collection with funding from the Campania region in 2013. In the exhibition path, Nord, Sud, Est, Ovest giocano a Shanghai was instead conceived and presented in 1989 by Luciano Fabro at the Capodimonte Museum, which now collaborates with this exhibition as a lender, as well as the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, which lends one of the photographs taken by Luisa Lambri at the House of Giulia Felice in 2020, in the context of the Pompeii Commitment project. Another presence of absolute importance is a collection of photographs taken by Nan Goldin between Naples and the Sorrento coast between 1986 and 1996, three of which are on loan from the collection of the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art. The Madre thus reaffirms its central role in promoting research and collaboration in an authoritative inter-institutional network. Equally important is the attention given to private collections and galleries in the city that have most deeply contributed to the presence of artists in the territory and the consequent realization of internationally significant productions on site. The title of the exhibition is inspired by the famous novel by Annie Ernaux, Nobel Prize in Literature 2022. In her book, the description of photographs and personal memories transforms into an autobiographical fresco and a choral and historiographical chronicle. In Les années, Ernaux warns that private images and memories are destined to disappear in the flow of history; this exhibition proposes to consider works of art as an antidote to the process of oblivion, evoked by the author. The disappearance of images evoked in the early poetic pages of the book was the starting point for the development of the concept that led to the definition of the exhibition logo by the graphic design studio Left Loft. The narrative proposed by the exhibition, punctuated by moments and episodes, follows a non-chronological structure that intends to reflect the fluctuating nature of human memory, offering the public a dynamic view that proceeds through shifts and references. As evidence of the ongoing study process on which The Years is based, additional exhibition rooms and works will be integrated into the exhibition path after the opening, and other exhibition chapters will follow the first.
