The Nivola museum is happy to present the first retrospective dedicated to Liliana Cano (Gorizia 1920-Sassari 2021). The exhibition pays homage to a painter who has marked eighty years of artistic life in Sardinia with her work, making painting her reason for living in a moment and in a historical context in which a similar choice was for a whole woman. other than easy; to an unconventional, undisciplined and impetuous figure, but also beloved for his ability to speak to the public with an anti-elitist, immediate and direct language; and above all to an artist who through figuration has enhanced the strength of painting, with images with an intense emotional charge.
Liliana Cano said of painting : “It is the easiest memory. The writing must be read. You have to have the desire to know history. Instead, the painting is placed in front of your eyes and reminds you of everything at the same time you look at it. "
The exhibition does not present to the public an overall reconstruction of the artist's long career, but rather wants to propose a useful key to understanding the meaning of a work that in its intended simplicity can risk being seen superficially, and sometimes has been. At the center of Liliana Cano's work is the idea of a femininity that is neither submissive nor quiet , but affirmative and proudly self-conscious.
The female figure is the protagonist of her work: we find her in the many portraits between the sixties and the eighties that pungently record the fashions and social tics of the period, as in the heroines of the classical myth, whose fairy tales are evoked as metaphors of feelings and universal emotions.
