The Pinacoteca di Villa Zito is located in the historic center of the city of Palermo, in the ancient noble palace of the eighteenth century. In 2005 the Sicily Foundation, owner of the building, set up the art gallery inside. The project was created to make the space dynamic and accessible to all Palermo and Sicilian citizens. The collection consists of paintings that Banco di Sicilia bought on the antiques market in the twentieth century. Other paintings come from the collections of the former Vittorio Emanuele savings bank and others from private donations. The exhibition path hosts more than a thousand works that include great artists of the seventeenth century up to the Sicilian landscape painters of the nineteenth century. Among the protagonists of Baroque painting are: Bernardo Strozzi, Francesco Solimena, Luca Giordano, Salvator Rosa and Mattia Preti. The painting of the nineteenth century is marked by the Grand Tour with the development of themes related to the poetics of realism and the landscape. Of great interest are the paintings by Sicilian interpreters, such as: Francesco Lojacono, Antonino Leto, Michele Catti and Ettore De Maria Bergler. A small nucleus of the collection consists of the pictorial testimonies of the twentieth century, with artists of the caliber of: Carlo Carrà, Renato Guttuso, Filippo De Pisis, Mario Sirone and many others. The Pinacoteca houses an archive that preserves volumes and documents related to the artists of the time.
