The Archaeological Park of Pompeii is located in the homonymous city and preserves the ancient city devastated by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Over the centuries the city remained covered by a mantle of ash and only the portions of the buildings on the upper floors were visible. At the end of the sixteenth century, Count Muzio Tuttavilla had a canal built by the architect Domenico Fontana to carry water to the city and, during the excavations, structures, objects and inscriptions were found. Only in 1748 did excavations begin to find the submerged city. Thanks to King Charles III of Bourbon and his successors until after the unification of Italy it was possible to unearth a large part of the archaeological area. Most of the areas found refer to private homes, the so-called domus. The finds from Pompeii have favored studies on the development of Roman dwellings and their structure. Certainly of great value are the frescoes in the "Pompeian" style with colors similar to red, yellow, white and black. Pompeii is a unique site of its kind, it is a city where time has stopped and still today it is possible to relive the forum (the ancient commercial square), the baths, the commercial streets and the necropolis. The stone-paved streets are in perfect condition where you can see the passage of the wagons and the incisive mark of the wheels. An important section is dedicated to the casts or the skeletons of the victims of the eruption found in the same positions in which they died. More than 100 casts are precious evidence of a timeless tragedy.
