The show

26 April – 9 June 2024GFI#11 | LUIGI GHIRRI AWARD 2024Contaminazioniworks by: Claudia Amatruda, Benedetta Casagrande, Noemi Comi, Massimiliano Corteselli, Camilla Marrese, Cinzia Romanin, Alessandro TruffaFor eleven years the Municipality of Reggio Emilia with the Giovane Fotografia Italiana project has supported the work of emerging artists who use the photographic medium as a reflection on the role it plays in today's visual culture and on the themes of the contemporary world. The climate emergency is increasingly pushing contemporary thought to question the anthropocentric paradigm that has characterized recent centuries. Faced with the belief that nature is a space of otherness tailored to and available to man - an uncontaminated place of good and beauty, in which to take refuge and escape, or a resource to be exploited and shaped - the idea emerges that nature does not exist as a biologically determined primordial condition, and that the entire planet derives from transformative processes carried out by multispecific subjects, each of whom should be recognized as capable and willing to configure. If "the planet is an enormous and choral garden where we all cultivate each other ” (Emanuele Coccia), the contemporary image is able to show new possible relationships between men (in their being individuals, communities, species) and the rest of the living, which are not based on an idea of superiority and domination, but explore the intermediate spaces, the zones of contamination and mutual transformation? That they help us to escape from the binary reductionism between city and nature, control and anarchy, normal and different, useful and useless, placing ourselves in the intermediate space of ambiguity, uncertainty, slippage and dissimilarity? The selected artists compete for the the awarding of the Luigi Ghirri Prize, which includes financial recognition and the opportunity to present a personal exhibition at the Triennale Milano which will take place in winter 2025. From 2023 the special mention Nuove traiettorie. GFI in Stockholm, promoted with the Italian Cultural Institute of Stockholm, offers another great opportunity for one of the finalists who will be able to carry out an artist residency in Stockholm to create an exhibition curated by IIC Stockholm. Three finalists will be selected to participate in the Photo-Match portfolio reading program as part of Fotofestiwal Łódź scheduled for June 2024 thanks to the partnership with the festival and a scholarship to cover travel and accommodation costs. Finally Photoworks together with Dalby Forest, Forestry England, offer two photographers a week-long immersive and eco-friendly artist residency in the heart of Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire – UK, along with mentorship, introduction to the team and ecosystems of the forest and networking opportunities.
