ongoing EUROPEAN PHOTOGRAPHY 2024

The show

From 26 April to 9 June 2024, Reggio Emilia returns to observe the changes of contemporaneity through the eyes of great photographers and young newcomers with the 19th edition of FOTOGRAFIA EUROPEA , the festival promoted and organized by the Palazzo Magnani Foundation and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia , with the contribution of the Emilia-Romagna Region .

Nature loves to hide is the theme chosen by the artistic direction of the Festival composed, again this year, of Tim Clark (editor of 1000 Words), Walter Guadagnini (historian of photography and Director of CAMERA - Italian Center for Photography) and Luce Lebart ( researcher and curator, Archive of Modern Conflict). A title that tries to incorporate - recovering the paradox from a famous fragment of Heraclitus - the power of a nature that often hides its essence from our eyes, but which increasingly reveals it in destructive ways, in a continuous process that can be understood as an oscillation between being and becoming. European Photography 2024 aims to explore, through the many prestigious personal and collective exhibitions of this edition, the connections between concealment and discovery that dominate our relationship with Nature, imagining new narratives, outside of that dominant attitude of control that our species exercises on the planet, to understand the dynamics and new directions to take.

This edition's historic exhibition returns to the rooms of PALAZZO MAGNANI with the first retrospective ever presented in Italy of Susan Meiselas , an American photographer known above all for her work in the conflict areas of Central America (1978-1983) and in particular for the his powerful shots of the Nicaraguan revolution. The exhibition, entitled Mediation s , brings together a selection of works ranging from the Seventies to today and reveals, through the different forms that Meiselas adopts to expand her work - in addition to traditional photographic reportage, also installations, books, films - the her unique approach as a photographer, who constantly questions the status of her images in relation to the context in which they are perceived, ranging from the personal to the geopolitical dimension. In her works the photographer involves subjects in an incessant exploration and development of narratives, often working over long periods and on a wide range of countries and subjects: from war to human rights issues, from cultural identity to the sex.
