From 28 April to 11 June 2023 EUROPEAN PHOTOGRAPHY returns to Reggio Emilia , the international photography festival - fresh winner of the 2022 edition of the Lucie Awards in New York, the most coveted award in the sector, as best Photo Festival of the Year -promoted and produced by the Palazzo Magnani Foundation together with the Municipality of Reggio Emilia and with the contribution of the Emilia-Romagna Region. Also this year, therefore, an important opportunity to observe a world in continuous and rapid change, of which photography freezes the moment to help us understand and understand its directions and dynamics.

The look of this eagerly awaited XVIII edition of European Photography is directed towards the strictest current events, where the roots of our individual and social identity are constantly put to the test. “ Europe matters: visions of a restless identity” is the theme to which the projects selected by the artistic direction of the Festival refer, made up of Tim Clark (editor 1000 Words & curator Photo London Discovery), Walter Guadagnini (historian of photography and Director of CAMERA - Italian Center for Photography), and Luce Lebart (historian of photography, co-author of the fundamental volume Une histoire global des femmes photographes, curator of exhibitions and researcher both for the Archive of Modern Conflict Collection and independent). An edition characterized not only by the quality of the exhibitions, but also by the level of meetings, conferences, book presentations and educational activities that will be organized during the festival.

On the ground floor of the same venue, Ariane Loze, a Belgian artist, presents Utopia and Studies and Definitions, two of four videos made between April 2017 and October 2018 to reflect on Europe. In the first, the artist, dressed in a yellow raincoat in a blue theatre, gives shape to a four-way dialogue on fundamental themes such as being a community, feeling represented, the search for the common good and, lastly, the imagination of a 'utopia. In Studies and Definitions , on the other hand, we witness a debate that arises from the reading of the first page of the consolidated version of the Treaty on the European Union, all conceived by Ariane Loze to confront existing texts.
