From 19 February to 19 March 2014
"Loss of quality, loss of identity" by Gianfranco Baruchello is a work that redefines space as a place for preserving memory. This project originates from the interest aroused by a group of mug photographs from the 1930s and 1950s, preserved in the State Archives of Livorno.
The artist selected 16 portraits, among the 400 passport photos of people monitored by the Livorno police, images that had undergone a natural process of deterioration over time.
Baruchello's reflection on the identity of people and on how time has transformed the loss of quality into a loss of identity, comes to life within the environment of VOLUME!, a space modified and divided into various cells, each of which with its own meaning and its own expression, also integrating a sound component.
In the last room, a text by Antonio Gramsci, read softly by the artist and revisited through the omission of some words, is distributed in the space of VOLUME! like a mantra. This helps create an atmosphere that amplifies reflection on identity, memory and the passage of time in the context of images and visual art.
