Vittore Carpaccio (circa 1460/65–1525/26) is one of the most significant painters of the Early Renaissance in Venice. He stages his colorful and detailed narrative paintings against the picturesque backdrop of the lagoon city or the exotic landscapes of the Near East. Lifelike characterized figures populate his works. Around 1500, he is among the most employed painters in Venice, competing with much more famous masters such as Giovanni Bellini (circa 1435–1516). So how does Carpaccio manage to maintain his unique position as a chronicler of Venetian life? Starting from this question, the State Gallery dedicates an exhibition to Carpaccio for the first time in Germany, juxtaposing some of his most important paintings with selected works by Giovanni Bellini. The presentation is complemented by works of other artists active in Venice between 1465 and 1525, including Gentile Bellini and Lorenzo Lotto. With around 50 paintings and works on paper, including outstanding loans from Venice, Florence, Madrid, and Washington, the exhibition illustrates how Carpaccio establishes himself as one of the most successful artists of the Early Renaissance in Venice through his highly original painting style. The exhibition is under the patronage of the Embassy of the Italian Republic in Germany.
