The Trondhjems Sjøfartsmuseum, founded in 1920, is located in a charming historic building from 1784 known as Brattørvakta or "Slaveriet" on the Brattøra peninsula, in the center of Trondheim. Since 2020, it is part of the Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum and preserves one of the most significant heritages of Norwegian maritime tradition.
The museum houses approximately 2,700 registered objects, although not all are on display; over 2,300 can be explored online through the Digitalt Museum portal. The permanent exhibitions include models of sailing ships, figurehead portraits, navigation instruments, historical photographs, nautical maps, business archives, uniforms, crew registers, and the complete Veritas register (1880–1993).
On the ground floor, the transition from sail to steam is narrated, while on the first floor, there is an interactive section dedicated to the era of sailing ships: children can "help Sivert the ship's mouse," learn to tie knots, and set sail in a room themed like the deck of a sailing ship. The museum is also responsible for the historic steamship SDS Hansteen (1866), which participates in educational programs and seasonal tours.
