The new exhibition opens with the show Always cheerful, Children! Lothar Meggendorfer and the animated book in Italy between the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries: a tribute to the German artist, one of the main creators of animated books of all time, who this year marks the centenary of his passing. The exhibition highlights the richness and variety of Meggendorfer's production - also through some of his most famous and spectacular masterpieces - as well as the success and circulation of his works in Italy. Special attention is dedicated to the rare volume "Pierino Porcupine Living", which "comes to life" thanks to an interactive multimedia table. The exhibition also offers a focus on music, a theme very dear to Meggendorfer, also through some animated shorts made by the Experimental Cinematography Center - Piedmont branch. The display provides an insight into the history and diffusion of animated books in the contemporary Italian publishing context, largely linked to international production. Alongside insights on the publishing houses Hoepli and Vallardi, the exhibition will showcase the unique animated albums created by Luisa Terzi between 1913 and 1917, recently restored in collaboration with the Conservation and Restoration Center "La Venaria Reale", and the animated versions of Pinocchio illustrated by Attilio Mussino. The section is completed by the animated and three-dimensional cards created by the graphic designer Sergio Martinatto, a great Pinocchio collector, whose collection is preserved and visible at MUSLI. The new exhibition will also feature the works of Caterina Cappelli and Chiara Meneghetti, the two Italian artists awarded the Meggendorfer Prize 2025 by the Movable Book Society in the Emerging Paper Engineer category. The exhibition will also include some artifacts created by the students of the "Book Design" course at the Passoni Art High School in Turin and by the students of the Literature and Illustration for Children course (academic year 2024-2025) at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin.
