Master who, together with Turner, is the greatest exponent of English romantic painting, John Constable is the protagonist of an exhibition that recounts and chronologically retraces the entire artistic career of the famous painter through the works of the Tate, UK .
The exhibition itinerary consists of around sixty works , ranging from sketches and small-sized paintings made en plein air, in a precocious impressionist way, to the most important and vast romantic landscapes, such as the famous view of Stratford Mill, depicting places in the immediate vicinity of his native village, Dedham Vale, in the county of Suffolk. Places of affection, sentimentally very important for this great artist who, unlike his colleague Turner, a great traveller, never leaves his beloved England and depicts Nature in a "picturesque" key, to use the famous terminology of the philosopher Immanuel's Aesthetics Kant.
Thus distinguishing himself from Turner, paintings of the "Sublime" or of a Nature that fascinates, but also inspires fear and even terror in Man, such as a sea storm, or a snowstorm, Constable instead depicts a welcoming, reassuring nature , in the which you can relax, fall asleep peacefully. Indeed, Constable concentrated on painting the places closely associated with his life and family circumstances. Emblematic places for the history of his "affections", as his main biographer CR Leslie wrote.
On display we also find works by contemporary artists of Constable, and in some cases, competitors, such as Turner, John Linnell, Benjamin West and others whose work intertwines and compares with that of Constable.
The Tate, UK has the world's foremost collection of Constable's work. The exhibition embraces the entire chronological arc of his production and includes landscapes, drawings, watercolours, engravings and portraits. After this stage at the Reggia di Venaria, the works will return to the Tate Museum and will no longer be visible outside England for a long time.
