The work was created for the altar of the Testa di San Giovanni family, in the church of San Francesco in Bassano. The figure of the Baptist, the head thrown back, the chest projected forward, comes from a combination of different angles that requires a comparison with the solutions imported to Venice by Paolo Veronese in the decoration of the ceilings. Veronesian is also the layout of the landscape, where the refined variations of browns of the trunks and rocks are welded to the cold blue, streaked with white of the sky with a skilful decorative effect all over the surface, unusual for Bassano.
