Adoration of the Shepherds with Saints Victor and Corona
Jacopo Da Ponte
Oil on canvas
The scene is set between some architectural ruins beyond which opens the landscape in tune with a cold light. The lowered point of view closely captures the sacred event: the Virgin is depicted in the act of discovering the sleeping Child huddled up. On the left, behind St. Joseph asleep, assist the saints Victor and Corona, co-patrons of the church of San Giuseppe, and overlooks a third figure, certainly a portrait for its obvious physiognomic characteristics. On the right the group of shepherds with their animals, copied from the real newspaper. The light coming from the gap in the sky, in which the angels hover in flight, and from the cloudy horizon unifies the composition giving a sense of classical solemnity.
