Herbert List is the champion of "metaphysical photography". It is he himself who coined this term to describe his work, in homage to the famous artistic movement which inspired him. He has the roots of his typically classical and austere compositions in ancient Greek and Italian art. He frequently visits these places, and it is during a trip to the South in 1951, the year in which he joined the famous Magnum agency, that he realizes the project presented in this exhibition. It is a series of 41 photographs taken on the Sicilian island of Favignana, both a fundamental document of local history and testimony of the German author's artistic maturity. At the center of the work are the typical tuna processing process and, above all, the slaughter, a tradition as alive in the local population as it is destined to disappear. In a rare and calibrated sequence, List celebrates life and death, treating animals as mythical figures and observing the island workers as the last custodians of an archaic knowledge.
