World of Plenty by Itamar Gilboa is an immersive installation that addresses the complex paradox of abundance and scarcity of food in the modern world. Rather than using graphs or statistics, it explores the complexities of the human body and mind. Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscientific knowledge, this installation combines sculpture and video to explore the physical, neurological, and social dimensions of hunger. World of Plenty depicts the artist's brain activity while reflecting on hunger, abundance, and food-related memories, revealing the emotional and neurological repercussions of the desire for sustenance. It uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to capture brain activity in response to fasting and food stimuli. These scans are then transformed into 3D printed sculptures, offering a representation of hunger.
By connecting this deeply personal biological experience to broader physical and social aspects of food, World of Plenty encourages viewers to consider the ethics of consumption and the complex relationship between personal behavior and global food systems. The installation stimulates an urgent dialogue on raising awareness and changing our consumption-driven society.
