The Palazzo del Podestà of Montevarchi, located next to the Collegiata in Piazza Varchi, has represented for centuries the political and administrative center of the city. Its origins date back to at least 1325, when the first documented podestà, Niccolò di Lottieri da Filicaia, promoted the construction of the public seat of the new municipality. The building, probably adapted from a pre-existing house of the Conti Guidi, was initially composed of a few rooms, with a large audience hall on the main floor and an internal courtyard.

Over time, the palace underwent numerous expansions and modifications. The adjacent bell tower, already documented in the 15th century, also had a civil role and was connected to the palace. From the 16th century onwards, with the progressive ruralization of Tuscany, many medieval structures such as loggias or battlements were modified or closed.

Between the 17th and 18th centuries, documents, inventories, and floor plans detailed the internal distribution, which included prisons, archives, kitchens, rooms, and the large “madornale” hall. The prisons remained in the palace until 1818.

At the same time, the adjacent building – the ancient public theater and Town Hall hall (later Teatro Cini) – was progressively integrated into the complex, becoming part of the area destined for the Pretura.

In the 19th century, the palace underwent significant interventions: facade renovation (1866), expansions to incorporate the old theater (1886–1889), construction of the new staircase, and reorganization of administrative spaces.

In 1931, a major restoration, under the supervision of the Royal Superintendence, restored the historic facade, added decorative elements in Renaissance style, and arranged more orderly provisions for the coats of arms.

In 1972, during internal works, the coffered wooden ceiling and various frescoes with podestà coats of arms from the 16th to the 18th centuries were discovered, then restored and enhanced.

Between 2004 and 2017, a comprehensive structural and functional restoration intervention, supported by the Municipality and the Tuscany Region, consolidated the building, recovered spaces, updated systems, and reconstituted cohesively the ownership of the historical parts. Today, the palace, approximately 1400 m² in size, houses institutional rooms such as the Podestà Hall and the Council Chamber and exhibition rooms such as the Ancient Hall.
