The Certosa di Padula is located in the city of the same name in Irpinia. The Charterhouse is one of the largest monasteries in all of Europe and was built in 1306 by Tommaso Sanseverino. The Certosa is made up of the Monastery of San Lorenzo, partly managed by the Campania Regional Museum Directorate, the Joe Petrosino house museum, the Civic Multimedia Museum and the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte. The Charterhouse is made up of a low house and a high house, more commonly called the first and second floors. The lower floor included workplaces such as warehouses, granaries, stables and laundries. Instead, the upper part was intended for the residential area. The House Museum is dedicated to the Italian-American policeman Giuseppe "Joe" Petrosino, born in Padula on 30 August 1860. The house museum houses the original furnishings and objects in the bedroom and in the dining room. There is also an innovative multimedia section where original films against the mafia are broadcast. The Civic Multimedia Museum deals with the millennial history of Padula from prehistoric times to the nineteenth century. Thanks to the help of multimedia and innovative supports, the museum offers a virtual guided tour of the territory and local history. Finally, the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte is an early Christian baptistery one of the oldest in the whole of the West. The Baptistery is dedicated to the cult of San Giovanni Battista and thanks to recent restorations it has been possible to trace the ancient frescoes. The Certosa di Padula offers the possibility to cross art, culture and history in one place.
