From May 29th to October 13th, 2024, the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia, in a space dedicated to photography, set up within the exhibition path of the Perugian museum, hosts the exhibition Umbria, a love story. Fulvio Roiter. The exhibition, curated by Alessandra Mauro, which inaugurates the project Camera Oscura. The National Gallery of Umbria for photography, curated by Marina Bon Valsassina and Costanza Neve, presents 27 images taken from the photographic campaign that Fulvio Roiter carried out in 1955 on behalf of the Swiss publishing house Guilde du Livre, to illustrate the Fioretti of Saint Francis. With his shots, Roiter embarks on a journey along the Franciscan itineraries through the most remote rural and Apennine Umbria, passing on the memory of a world crystallized for centuries, which within a few decades will undergo transformations due to a pervasive modernity that has modified many of its characteristics and made the memory faint. Roiter's lens captures alleys where faces of children are seen surprised playing with wicker baskets or intent on carrying the weight of a sack full of fruits and vegetables from the fields, snowy landscapes crossed by the slow pace of mules or by the moving sign of small crooked wrought iron crosses, deserted villages because during the day all the inhabitants are busy cultivating the land and taking care of the animals. The images convey the atmosphere of a slow life, where architectures blend perfectly with the landscape and people seem to coexist in harmony with nature.
