From 24 January to 19 April 2026
On Saturday, January 24th at 5:00 PM at the Concordiese National Museum in Portogruaro (VE), the exhibition "Sport and Health in Roman Coins. A visual story through silver denari coins from Cinto Caomaggiore" will be inaugurated, organized by the Veneto National Museums Regional Directorate and curated by archaeologists Federico Bonfanti and Andrea Ziglio.
The exhibition is part of the Cultural Olympiad program of the Milano Cortina Foundation 2026, a multidisciplinary, plural, and widespread program that will animate Italy to promote Olympic values through culture, heritage, and sports, in preparation for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games that Italy will host respectively from February 6 to 22 and from March 6 to 15, 2026.
The treasure of Cinto Caomaggiore, found accidentally in two separate moments (1904 and 1984) in the homonymous locality, consists of over 5500 silver denari coins minted between 211 BC and the reign of Tiberius (14-37 AD) preserved at the Concordiese National Museum in Portogruaro. It is one of the most important Roman-era coin finds in Europe.
Based on the characteristics of the coins that compose it and the place of concealment, near the road that led from the colony of Iulia Concordia to the North, towards Noricum (present-day Austria), it has been hypothesized that it was the savings of an individual active in financial markets (money changers, loans, and investments) of the ancient city.
According to the most recent investigations, it seems that the treasure was hidden shortly before 33 AD, the year in which a severe financial crisis broke out partly due to a shortage of circulating currency, causing an economic paralysis. The denarii of Cinto Caomaggiore, almost all in excellent condition, offer us many insights into the traditions, customs, and habits of the Roman world, thanks to a great variability of the iconographic themes represented according to types and forms in harmony with the established power.
