The contrast of two opposite situations characterizes “Hairetikos”, the proposal by Alessandro Bulgini for the VOLUME! Foundation.
The circumstance that the visitor is faced with, at first, takes the form of the adaptation of the space into a noble chamber, perfectly characterized and illuminated by a chandelier and neon lights that reconstruct the vault.
Through a narrow passage you reach the second room where you return to a primordial state of total darkness. The darkness swallows until the eye gets used to it, and then embraces the void and makes it home, like the caves for the first men. While it may seem unlikely, this is where the artist leaves his mark with three paintings that reveal themselves only on his own terms.
The essence of Bulgini's intervention lies in this: only through moving away from what appears to be comfortable can one arrive at an archaic and essential truth. The clarity of the message is perceptible in the balanced ambivalence of situations, between dark and light, black and white, visible and invisible.
