The Musee de l'histoire de la médecine de Toulouse is a Toulouse museum dedicated to the history of medicine. The museum holds a large collection of different items: paintings, sculptures, ancient medical instruments and documents. In fact, in the Musee de l'histoire de la médecine the history of medicine in the city of Toulouse is traced back to 700 years back in time through various themes, such as the history of teaching medicine and surgery, the history of the hospitals of Toulouse and of his patients. Its founder, Professor Jean-Charles Auvergant, wanted to combine the historical, scientific and technical aspects with the artistic aspects that the art of medicine is capable of evoking. This made it possible to open the museum to a wider public, with the aim of making clear the key role of medicine in society. In Toulouse, medicine has a very ancient history: the University of Toulouse was in fact created in 1229, with the three faculties of Theology, Law and Arts: Medicine was included in the latter. However, the study of surgery only arrived in the 1500s. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions on both cultural and scientific themes.
