Among the many representations of the Deposition of Jesus, it is worth mentioning the work (256 x 238 x 186 cm) by the artist from Molfetta, Giulio Cozzoli (Molfetta 1882-1957), a major work (1931-1945) left in plaster due to his sudden death. The artist's dream was realized in different stages thanks to the stubborn will of his nephew Maurangelo Cozzoli, who meticulously followed all the phases of the casting, directly intervening with his daughter Antonietta in the finishing touches. On May 10, 1971, the statuary block was transferred from Molfetta to Verona and returned to its original location on December 13, 1989; it took another seven years for the bronze finishes on each individual figure of the group until it was patinated in its final appearance in the last days of August 1996 by the artistic foundry Massimo Del Chiaro in Pietrasanta (Cfr. G. MONGELLI, Giulio Cozzoli sculptor (1882-1957). The Deposition, Molfetta 1999). The decision to create the Deposition probably stems from the artist's stay in Rome and is inspired by the classical canons of painting and sculpture. The sculptural group depicts the lifeless body of Christ naked, taken down from the cross and supported by the Mother, by John the Evangelist, by Joseph of Arimathea, and by Mary Magdalene. The five figures are fully sculpted. In a perspective scene from bottom to top, the viewer contemplates the body of Christ in the arms of St. John and Joseph of Arimathea, while the head is supported by the hands of the Mother and the feet are held by the soft hair of the kneeling Mary Magdalene. The four figures, expressing grief, seem to be in an attitude of adoration of the Lord's body. An anatomically perfect body, that of Christ, which appears asleep, with a sweet expression on his face, almost as if waking up and helped by the two male figures supporting him to stand up. Sixty years after the sculptor's death, considered one of the greatest sculptors of Italian twentieth century, the Deposition, along with other works, after being deposited at the Factory of San Domenico in Molfetta, are welcomed by Mons. Domenico Cornacchia, by the will of Giulio Cozzoli's heirs, in the Diocesan Museum, following the redevelopment of the entrance, and thanks to the generosity of Mr. Giuseppe Piccininni. It is the tribute that the Cultural Center, whose services are entrusted to the FeArT Cooperative, wants to pay to the artist from Molfetta.
