Description

Terracotta "dedication" statuettes representing a standing female figure, with disproportionately long arms and hands adhering to the peplos, belonging to two distinct types. The first is documented by a single statuette of slender proportions, which draw a long-limbed and slender figure. and some details of the clothing; The characterization of the hair is variable, smooth or marked by oblique or herringbone incisions. The back of most of the specimens is smooth, but in a statuette the plastic rendering of the hair also continues on the back face. On some of them, on the other hand, a longitudinal band with running spirals motif is arranged on the back. The statuettes probably reproduce the statue of the divinity, female, which was worshiped. The cult that was practiced in Cozzo Michelicchio was almost certainly aimed at impetrating the fertility, of the fields, of the flocks, of the women; it is probable that it was participated both by the Greeks, now settled in Sibari for almost a century, and by the descendants of the Enotri.
