From 11 April to 31 August 2025
Museion presents Focus: Recent Videos from the Museion Collection, an exhibition featuring works by Barbara Gamper, Berty Skuber, James Richards, and Korakrit Arunanondchai. Acquired in the last decade, these videos will be presented for the first time at Museion, exploring memory through experimental video techniques, including loops, overlays, and flickering. Video art being a fundamental part of contemporary museum collections, Museion has actively expanded its own collection, embracing this dynamic medium capable of revealing new meanings through the layering of visual and narrative languages.
Currently, the museum owns 167 video works, including 28 installations and 139 single-channel films, which constitute a fundamental part of its collection of 4,450 pieces. This collection dates back to a crucial moment in 2007-2008 when Museion acquired 52 video works through the Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) in New York. Since then, video art has remained a central area of growth, intertwining historical narrative, experimental storytelling, and technological innovation, becoming an intergenerational artistic language.
At the heart of this exhibition is an exploration of time and the spectral presence of the past. The selected videos delve into themes of memory and transformation, using archival footage, found materials, and visual distortions that challenge conventional storytelling. Like archaeologists bringing to light forgotten stories, the present artists use editing, appropriation, and layering to construct narratives that defy the linearity of time.
