From 19 September to 30 November 2025
Deadline With The World is the first collaborative exhibition by Gabriele Garavaglia (1981, Vercelli / Zurich) and Miriam Laura Leonardi (1985, Lörrach / Zurich). While both artistic practices have their roots in conceptual art, in Garavaglia's work elements drawn from urban mythologies, fantasy literature, and cinematic aesthetics are incorporated into installations full of political implications. In Leonardi's work, the observation of public space translates into a rigorous investigation of language, in which semantic codes are disarticulated and reshaped into images with strong critical and poetic impact. For the Swiss Institute, they create a project conceived from the exhibition context, which includes both collaborative works and individual pieces.
Garavaglia and Leonardi create an installation specifically designed for the spaces of the Swiss Institute in Milan. Titled Deadline With The World, the exhibition engages with the sterile and corporate architecture of the building, transforming it into a para-urban landscape punctuated by a series of shutters. The initial impression is that of readymades taken from the street, but upon closer inspection, the objects are designed to the smallest detail, brought to their maximum formal cleanliness. The works are strategically placed on the walls to eliminate any architectural elements of disturbance, such as air vents, doors, and other accesses.
Stripped of its pre-existing elements, the Swiss Institute opens up to new possible places. Garavaglia and Leonardi's interventions draw on the iconography of the garage as a space of promise, of the eternal "not yet." It is someone's rehearsal room to learn to play, but it is also the first office of the "self-made man" in the foundational myth of technological innovation. A life-size bulldozer dominates the space, an eccentric trophy kept in the garage, or a weapon ready to uproot whatever it encounters. Above the shutters, a sign limiting access to vehicles too tall
