Archaeological area of Venosa

The archaeological area contains the monumental remains of the Latin colony of Venusia (founded in 291 BC) from the republican period to the medieval age . There are large public complexes, such as the thermal plant built in the first century. AD and renovated until the third century. AD, the residential districts, including a domus with mosaics , a block delimited by two paved road axes. The majestic backdrop of the itinerary is the Abbey of the Holy Trinity , fully restored making the various construction phases legible: from the Roman imperial domus to the paleochristian episcopal complex, to the Benedictine abbey dating back to the Norman era.

Among the subsequent interventions, the new arrangement, in the sixteenth century, of the tomb of Roberto il Guiscardo and his brothers should be noted. Both from the park and from the apse of the church you can access the Incompiuta, an ecclesial structure built in the Norman era and never completed. The extension of the park provides for integration with the adjacent archaeological areas where the amphitheater and the Christian and Jewish catacombs are visible.
