Tempietto sul Clitunno

Considered one of the most interesting early medieval monuments of Umbria, it is among the seven jewels of art and Lombard architecture in Italy that have recently been included in the prestigious list of UNESCO World Heritage. Among the most attractive elements of the visit is the suggestive position, already described by Pliny the Younger as a place covered by "ancient and shady cypress trees at whose feet springs a spring that forms a pond". The building, which reuses elements of Roman architecture perhaps related to the structures of a previous shrine named after the god Clitumnus (divinity identified with Jupiter), has the form of a classical temple: rests on a high podium with a front consisting of four Corinthian columns ( pronao tetrastilo) that supports the trabeation on which runs the inscription that dedicates the church to the "God of angels". The interior, accessed via two side staircases, has an apse with a complex decoration where relief sculpture (originally polychrome) and frescoes with a Christian theme (Christ blessing, St. Peter's, St. Paul's, Angels with a Gemmed Cross) , dated to the 8th century A.D. The small shrine-tabernacle at the center of the apse re-empts sculptural elements of the first century. A.D. Considered for a long time a Roman chapel, the building has been the subject of numerous interpretations regarding its construction phases. A first dating proposal sees it raised in the IV-V century. d.C., as a church dedicated to S. Salvatore. Recent studies, instead, have allowed to limit the chronology of the building to the Lombard age, with an oscillation between the beginnings of the VII and the full VIII century.
