New Kingdom, 20th dynasty, reign of Ramesses III (1187 BC - 1157 BC), Deir el-Medina. The papyrus is the first document on a strike in history. Written by the scribe Amennakht, it reports the news of protests that took place during the reign of Ramesses III in Deir el-Medina. The workers are protesting because they are not receiving their food rations, payment for their work in the Valley of the Kings. Despite several attempts at reconciliation, the protest lasts for several days. The workers justify their actions in this way: If we have come to this, it is because of hunger and thirst... Write to our perfect pharaoh regarding our words, write to the vizier, our superior, so that provisions may be given to us.
