In the lower band, we witness the Departure of the Virgin for the Temple. The priest awaits the young Mary under a sort of circular, linteled shrine. The girl quickly climbs the staircase, bordered by high handrails, observed with pride and trepidation by Joachim and Anne, at the foot of the balustrade on the left, where the donors (the face looking outward may perhaps be identified with the painter's self-portrait) observe the scene on the right of the composition, which adopts a setting of great scenic success (the platform of the small temple with its steep staircase, the majestic red-colored rusticated palace on the left), although not conforming to Brunelleschi's perspective.
